Why You Need HDTV

When HDTV (high-definition television) was first advertised in 1998, rumors began to spread that the ultimate television experience was about to emerge. Not only could you enjoy the best in image resolution, but also digital surround sound that made you feel like you were in the movie or television show.

What is HDTV?

HDTV is innovative where your old television was not. When you buy that new HDTV, you’ll notice that the images on the screen are far clearer and crisper than they were on your old television. This is because old televisions used to work through the conversion of waves in the air to analog signals. However, by doing this, the quality of the picture is diminished. On an LCD HDTV or plasma HDTV, instead of this conversion, signals are sent digitally, thus not reducing the overall quality.

How does HDTV work and what are the advantages?

Right now, the United States is switching its broadcasting method from analog to DTV (digital television). While you’ll still be able to get analog signals through a cable network or through a satellite service, your old television isn’t going to be able to provide you with these advantages of HDTV:

  • No matter the size of the screen, the picture quality is better with HDTV. Even larger screens will still show every little detail.
  • HDTV uses multicasting, or the broadcast of multiple signals at the same time over the same bandwidth.
  • Interactive content is possible so that shows and movies can be include the audience in games and contests.
  • The entire screen on an HDTV will show the signal that it does receive – analogs only use every other pixel line.
  • HDTV broadcast channels will be visible in all of their brilliant colors and images.

What are the drawbacks of HDTV?

Are there drawbacks to HDTV? At first, this will be an expensive venture. You will need to replace your old television, for example. But all televisions now come with the basic conversion equipment for being able to provide HDTV – you’ll just need to look into the various HDTV antennas and HDTV tuners.
